The Black-and-White Portraits I’ve Always Wanted. Thanks to Whispy Shades Photography

We recently took a little road trip to see Bethany at Whispy Shades Photography for a photo session I’ve been dreaming about for years and I’m so excited to finally share it.

The studio was about a 45–55 minute drive from home, and honestly, it turned out to be the perfect reset. The kids were pointing out every single thing they saw, farms, cows, random signs, and by the time we pulled in, everyone was actually in a great mood. I had been a little nervous they’d be tired from the drive, but the studio is surrounded by plenty of open space to stretch your legs, shake off the wiggles, and burn off some energy. It ended up being perfect. It felt more like a spontaneous day trip than a “let’s be on our best behavior for family pictures” kind of thing. (Let’s be honest, that never works anyway.)

Bethany and I had emailed quite a bit beforehand, but this was our first time meeting in person and still, she greeted us like we were old friends. She has a big family too, so she gets it. If you know, you know: the sibling chaos, the inside jokes, the weird faces and unexpected piggyback rides. She didn’t just roll with it, she made it feel easy. For the kids and for me.

At one point, she pulled out this giant fan and the kids thought it was the coolest thing ever. Their hair flying everywhere, belly laughs, pure joy. I swear it was one of the highlights of the whole day.

Now let me tell you why this session meant so much to me. A few years ago, I started dreaming about doing a black-and-white photo session of my kids. I love the way that style pulls you into the details - the freckles, the dimples, the quiet expressions. It’s simple and striking in the best way. Finally getting to do this felt really special, and I’m so, so thankful Bethany was on board to help bring it to life.

Email Bethany today to book your session and be sure to follow her on Instagram.
